We had such a wonderful first 1 1/2 weeks of school. This class is full of eager learners who want to improve and grow this year. They work so well as a team and are very kind to each other. After learning the procedures/routines and focusing on team building activities the first few days of school, we jumped headfirst into the curriculum. I wanted to give you a little overview of all we accomplished this week. What we LearnedMath: We began the Eureka Math curriculum and got through lessons 1-4. We will continue lesson 4 on Monday, as it is particularly difficult. We are studying place value and measurement (metric system). Those who meet with Mrs. Miller for math began groups this week and seemed to enjoy their learning experiences! Language Arts: We took a pre-test on main idea and commas. We practiced finding the central idea in a non-fiction text, using social studies texts and current event articles. Social Studies: We discussed the origins of democracy and how America is technically a representative democratic republic. We also began discussing the Articles of Confederation, the Constitutional Convention, and the Constitution. Science: We did two STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities. First, in groups of four we created structures using only pasta and marshmallows. Prizes were awarded to the sturdiest, tallest, and most creative.
