Constitution Day! Have you ever wondered why your calendars say Constitution Day on September 17th, but you never hear much more about it? Our legislators were thinking the same thing. Last year, a law was enacted that would require public schools to observe Constitution Day and do activities related to celebrating this amazing document. Our Constitution is so unique that many other countries have modeled their own after ours! Here in 5K, we have the special opportunity to celebrate the Constitution for about a MONTH because it is in our standards. We have been learning all about the issues with the Articles of Confederation, what fueled the desire to have a Constitution, and the famous meeting in Philadelphia (the Constitutional Convention) where the document was first drafted. To celebrate this famous day, we had the privilege of working with our Timberwolf Buddies in Mrs. Garcia's 2nd grade class. We watched a short video on the Constitution with them and read a short book to each of our buddies. We then helped them do a word sort activity that related to the Constitution. We all really enjoyed it! In our own classroom, we watched a video on the separation of powers that was produced by the National Constitution Center in Washington, D.C. They took us inside their museum and taught us all about the branches of government and the need we have for a balanced government. Additionally, we made posters on the Bill of Rights that we shared with our second grade buddies. It was quite a fun-filled day! What Else did we do this week?
